After Harpur Hill was decommissioned in the 1960’s a local businessman bought the underground storage facility from the MoD. He then set up a mushroom factory, producing vast amounts of mushrooms. The underground facility became at one stage the biggest producer of mushrooms in the world and was very common to be seen on the menu at local restaurants. Today the underground storage facility that lies in the hill is owned my a multi-national transport company which stores wine and cigarettes as a bonded warehouse under the supervision of Her Majesties Revenue commissioners.
